Travelex is undergoing a significant modernisation of its technology infrastructure by replacing its fragmented legacy supply chain systems with a single, off-the-shelf solution as part of a wider move to the cloud.

While most services have transitioned from local datacentres to the cloud, some core systems—including the company's global supply chain backbone, which manages the movement of cash between seven regional vaults—have proved more complex and are now being updated. The company aims to standardise all regions onto a unified platform to increase efficiency, maintainability, and speed of operation.

Currently, Travelex is in the process of selecting a vendor from a shortlist. The new software, expected to take about 18 months to implement at the first vault in the UK, will eventually be rolled out across all locations. This forms part of Travelex’s ambition to become an omnichannel service provider, enabling customers to order cash in-branch, from lockers, ATMs, or at home, with an advanced supply chain system supporting fast, convenient fulfilment.
The transformation goes beyond supply chain software. Travelex’s in-house development teams are focusing on solutions powered by machine learning and AI, such as demand forecasting and price prediction tools. CTO Emanuele Tomeo highlights investments in generative AI, with pilot programmes leading to productivity gains of 20–40% among developers—particularly in documentation, testing, and code explanation tasks.

Having emerged from previous challenges, including a cyberattack and industry disruption during the Covid-19 pandemic, Travelex is investing in a modern data platform to centralise analytics, support real-time insights, and further enable the rollout of predictive and dynamic pricing technologies. These initiatives are designed to solidify Travelex’s digital foundations and support its global ambitions.
